Metriql review
A self-hosted metrics layer that connects governed definitions to BI, APIs, and embedded analytics.

Metriql is an open-source metrics store and semantic layer for data teams that want shared analytical definitions across BI tools, APIs, and embedded applications. It connects to dbt projects, maps dbt resources to datasets, and centralizes metrics, measures, dimensions, relationships, joins, and aggregate models. The product is aimed at organizations building a governed metrics layer on top of an existing data warehouse, with self-hosted deployment available through API and related interfaces.
Its strongest fit is a dbt-centered analytics environment with multiple consumption paths. Metriql can expose datasets through a REST API, its MQL SQL dialect, query rewriting, and JDBC connectivity. The integration list includes Looker, Tableau, Redash, SeekTable, Superset, Mode Analytics, Sisense Cloud, ThoughtSpot, Metabase, Google Data Studio, Google Sheets, DBeaver, JetBrains DataGrip, and Python. Embedded analytics applications are also supported, while JWT authorization can use user attributes. This breadth makes Metriql relevant when teams need consistent definitions across dashboards, developer tools, spreadsheets, and product experiences.
The trade-off is operational scope. Metriql runs on top of an existing warehouse and rewrites analytical queries for execution there, so it does not replace warehouse infrastructure or provide its own execution engine. Its deployment model is self-hosted, placing setup and ongoing operation with the adopting team. The stated feature set covers governed metrics, dimensions and joins, query access, and dbt integration, but not verified row-level security or AI features. Choose Metriql when open-source control, dbt alignment, and broad access methods matter; consider another option if you need a managed cloud service or those additional capabilities.
Metriql pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Centralizes metrics, measures, dimensions, joins, and aggregate models
- Connects with major BI tools through JDBC, REST, and integrations
- Supports embedded analytics and JWT authorization with user attributes
- Where it doesn't
- Requires a self-hosted deployment and an existing data warehouse
- Adds a semantic layer rather than providing its own query execution engine
- Row-level security and AI features are outside its stated feature set
