metasyn review
A free, self-hosted toolkit for Python-based synthetic tables and related datasets.

metasyn is an MIT-licensed, open-source Python package for generating synthetic tabular data from dataframes or declarative metadata. It fits MetaFrame models to columns, stores machine-readable Generative Metadata Format (GMF) metadata, and generates new rows without retaining raw records. The package is aimed at researchers, public organisations, data providers and developers handling sensitive datasets, particularly Python users working locally on Windows, macOS or Linux.
Its ecosystem supports pandas and Polars dataframes, Faker-based names and other realistic values, Docker usage, and a Python API for row generation. The command-line interface includes create-meta, synthesize and schema commands, while outputs can include CSV, SAV, ZSAV, Feather, Parquet, PKL and XLSX. GMF metadata can be saved as JSON or TOML, giving teams an auditable representation of fitted models. Configuration files also support data-free generation, and the documented model types cover categorical, string, integer, float, date, time and datetime values.
The feature set extends beyond single-table samples: metasyn handles unique values and keys, detects formatted strings and identifiers, and supports synthesis across multiple tables with key relations. Privacy and disclosure-control plugins are available as part of the project, alongside missing-value handling. Its focus remains tabular synthesis, with self-hosted deployment and community or documentation support. Teams wanting a local, inspectable Python workflow should consider metasyn; buyers seeking non-tabular modalities, managed hosting or built-in AI features should look elsewhere.
