Our verdict on MeshHold
MeshHold is an open-source, self-hosted private cloud and mesh network for homelab users, self-hosting enthusiasts, sysadmins and organizations that need control over storage hardware, data location or offline connectivity. The Community Edition is free, AGPL-3.0 licensed and self-hosted, with no artificial limits on nodes, users, vaults or replication factor. It supports web, Windows, Linux, Android, API and self-hosted deployments, including Docker and Raspberry Pi environments. Storage, chat, calls, VPN, media, S3 and webhooks are included in the published Community Edition scope.
Its strongest fit is distributed storage rather than basic file hosting. Configurable replication factors, content-addressed blocks and file versioning support more involved deployments, while S3 compatibility with AWS SigV4, mounted vaults, directories and WebDAV broaden platform compatibility. End-to-end encryption covers storage and transport, and password-protected public links can include expiry and revocation. Integrations with Nextcloud, ownCloud, Immich, Mastodon, PeerTube, Grafana and GitHub, alongside support for Claude Code, OpenCode and Gemini CLI, make MeshHold relevant to self-hosted software ecosystems. Encrypted chat, file transfer, mesh VPN, TCP/UDP tunnels and document and spreadsheet co-editing extend it beyond storage.
The trade-off is operational maturity and focus. MeshHold runs without a hosted control plane, so deployment, maintenance and availability depend on the infrastructure and administration behind it. The official downloads page states that stable release versions are not yet available and that only nightly builds can be downloaded. That makes it a better choice for technically capable users who value open source, replication and infrastructure control than for organizations seeking a conventional managed cloud service or a narrowly focused file-sharing product. Teams evaluating it should also account for the breadth of its networking, collaboration and media features, which may add complexity when only encrypted storage is required.
