MemberMatters is a self-hosted, open-source membership, billing, and access-control portal for makerspaces and community groups. It supports member registration, login, profiles, recurring credit-card payments through Stripe, self-service subscription cancellation, and card updates. The product also covers access permissions, swipe-card control, audit logs, kiosk sign-in and sign-out, notifications, administrative tools, and Memberbucks on-site and portal payments. Web-browser access is available, with Linux support through its documented hosting model and optional access-control hardware integrations.
Its strongest fit is for facilities where membership billing and physical access belong in the same system. Access permissions, swipe-card control, audit logs, and hardware integration extend the product beyond a conventional subscription portal. Kiosk mode gives members a dedicated way to sign in and out, while OIDC and Discourse single sign-on support connected identity workflows. Integrations include Stripe, Canvas, Moodle, Trello, SendGrid, Postmark, Twilio, and Discord, giving administrators options for payments, learning platforms, issue reporting, email, SMS, and community communication.
The published deployment model is important to the buying decision: MemberMatters is officially supported as a Docker image running on an Ubuntu Server LTS host. That makes it a practical choice for technical teams that can manage a self-hosted web application and connect compatible access-control hardware. It is less aligned with organizations seeking a general-purpose gated-content membership website or a conventional hosted billing product. Choose it when facility access, recurring memberships, and operational records need to work together; look elsewhere when makerspace-style access control is outside the requirement.
