Medusa is a self-hosted, command-line backup and restore system for Apache Cassandra. It is designed for system administrators operating Cassandra nodes and clusters, with support for both single-node and cluster-wide workflows. The product covers backup creation, restoration, verification and cleanup rather than serving as a general-purpose database protection platform.

Its strongest capabilities are centered on operational control. Administrators can create full or differential backups, restore data in place or to a different Cassandra cluster, and coordinate backup activity across a cluster. Verification checks manifests, file presence, file sizes and hashes, giving teams several ways to validate backup contents. Purge policies can be configured by backup age or count, which supports storage-lifecycle management without relying on a fixed retention period.

Medusa also fits environments that already use object storage. Backup targets include local storage, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Blob Storage, AWS S3 and compatible systems, with integrations covering IBM Cloud Object Storage, MinIO and Ceph Object Gateway. The trade-off is its narrow, infrastructure-focused design: deployment is self-hosted on Linux and operation is command-line based. Teams running Apache Cassandra and managing their own infrastructure should find the feature set aligned with cluster backup and recovery needs. Teams seeking a hosted backup service, a graphical administration layer or support for databases beyond Cassandra should choose a different tool.

Medusa pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Cluster-wide orchestration with single-node and remote restore
    • Full and differential backups with configurable purge policies
    • Verification using manifests, file presence, sizes and hashes
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires self-hosted deployment on Linux Cassandra nodes
    • Focused specifically on Apache Cassandra
    • Command-line operation may not suit teams seeking a hosted console
