MediaPortal review
A Windows-focused media center for playback, live TV, network shares and home theater.

MediaPortal is free, open-source media center software for Windows PCs and home-theater setups. It combines video playback with DVD and Blu-ray menus, subtitle support, movie metadata, music, FM and web radio, live TV viewing, scheduling and recording. Playback can draw from local storage, network drives, network shares and remote FTP shares. Its strongest fit is a Windows-based living-room setup that needs more than a basic video player, particularly one that brings live television and DVR functions into the same application.
Its feature depth is broad for a free media center. The published capabilities cover formats including MPEG-2, MPEG-1, MOV, H.264, VC-1, DivX, Xvid, AC3, DTS, MP3, AAC and Matroska, alongside DVD and Blu-ray playback. Movie organization adds covers, posters, actor details and other metadata. Plugins and customizable skins provide room for extensions and presentation changes, while hardware acceleration can be configured through LAV Video. This makes MediaPortal suited to users who want a configurable home-theater environment rather than a narrowly focused player.
The main platform consideration is important: the official site documents Windows as the supported operating system. Web, Android and iOS are available as remote interfaces, not as the main desktop player, so users seeking a native cross-platform media player should look elsewhere. Setup may also require attention to installed Windows codecs and LAV Video configuration, especially when optimizing playback hardware. Choose MediaPortal for a Windows-centered library and live-TV system with plugins, metadata and remote control options; choose an alternative if native playback across desktop operating systems is the priority.
