MediaMTX is a zero-dependency, open-source live media server and proxy for publishing, reading, forwarding, recording, and playing back real-time video and audio. It is designed for developers, broadcasters, camera-system operators, and infrastructure teams that need a self-hosted media router. Standalone executables and Docker containers support Linux, Windows, and macOS, while browser pages can publish and read streams.

The pricing model is open source with a free plan, rather than a set of paid tiers with different feature limits. That keeps the software accessible for teams able to operate their own infrastructure. Its ecosystem includes FFmpeg, GStreamer, OBS Studio, Python, Golang, Unity, VLC, Raspberry Pi Cameras, YouTube, Twitch, and web browsers. Streams can be forwarded to destinations including YouTube and Twitch, and the Control API and Prometheus-compatible metrics support integration with surrounding infrastructure.

Its standout capability is protocol breadth combined with automatic conversion. MediaMTX can accept and deliver streams through Media-over-QUIC, SRT, WebRTC, RTSP, RTMP, and HLS, while also supporting MPEG-TS and RTP publishing. It can record to local disk in fMP4 or MPEG-TS, serve recorded playback through a dedicated HTTP server, and keep paths available with a repeating offline segment or MP4 file. Choose MediaMTX when protocol conversion, relay, authentication, and local media control matter more than a managed service. Choose an alternative when the priority is vendor-hosted cloud recording or a fully managed browser production workflow.

MediaMTX pros and cons

    • Supports Media-over-QUIC, SRT, WebRTC, RTSP, RTMP, HLS, MPEG-TS, and RTP
    • Converts, forwards, records, and plays back live streams
    • Offers internal, HTTP, and JWT authentication plus APIs and metrics
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires self-hosted deployment rather than a vendor-hosted service
    • Records to local disk instead of vendor-hosted cloud storage
    • Technical setup may exceed the needs of users seeking a hosted browser studio
