Our verdict on MCDatapacker
MCDatapacker is a free, open-source desktop application for creating and editing Minecraft datapacks. It is aimed at Minecraft creators who want visual tools alongside code editing, rather than working only with raw files. The application supports datapacks from Minecraft 1.15 through 1.20.4, with partial support through 1.21.4, and runs on Windows and Linux.
Its strongest area is the combination of project organization, validation, and specialized editors. A file-tree interface handles adding, renaming, and deleting files, while the multi-tab code editor provides syntax highlighting, function-file smart completion, and checking for function and JSON errors. Visual editors cover recipes, predicates, loot tables, and item modifiers. MCDatapacker also provides datapack file and command-usage statistics, raw JSON text editing, and an advancement-tree viewer. Embedded vanilla datapack files support offline viewing, which makes the application useful for inspecting game data while working on a project.
Version coverage is the main consideration for prospective users. The application is a strong fit for creators working on supported Minecraft versions who want free visual editing and local project management. However, the side editors other than the recipe editor have not been updated for newer versions, so users targeting newer datapack formats should review whether the relevant editor matches their workflow. MCDatapacker also does not include AI features and is distributed only for Windows and Linux. Choose it for open-source desktop editing with validation and visual datapack tools; consider another option if you need broader platform coverage or consistently updated side editors for newer versions.
