Our verdict on mc-router
mc-router is an open-source, self-hosted router for Minecraft Java Edition connections. It directs players to backend servers based on the requested server address, using either static hostname mappings or automatic discovery in Docker and Kubernetes. The project is suited to Minecraft network operators running containerized infrastructure, home deployments, or other environments where routing is managed directly. It can work alongside Velocity and BungeeCord and provides standalone binaries for Linux, macOS, and Windows, plus a Docker image.
Its strongest fit is infrastructure-aware routing. Docker, Docker Swarm, and Kubernetes integrations support backend discovery and auto-scaling, while the REST API provides route administration. Operators can also apply connection rate limits, manage client IP allow and deny lists, and receive webhook notifications for player connections and disconnections. Prometheus and InfluxDB metrics exposure adds monitoring options, and ngrok agent integration supports another connectivity pattern. These features make mc-router broader than a static hostname switch, particularly for networks whose backends change with container workloads.
The main trade-off is that mc-router is a focused router rather than a complete traffic-management layer. Verified fallback routing is absent, so networks that depend on automatic alternate destinations should consider a different option. Its self-hosted model also places deployment and operations with the network administrator instead of providing a commercial hosted service. Choose mc-router when Docker or Kubernetes discovery, hostname-based routing, and infrastructure controls are priorities. Look elsewhere if fallback behavior is central to the network design or if the preferred approach is managed hosting rather than operating the routing layer directly.
