MATPOWER review
A research-focused toolkit for steady-state grid analysis, not hosted energy monitoring.

MATPOWER is a free, open-source package of MATLAB-language functions and classes for simulating and optimizing steady-state power systems. It is aimed at power-system researchers and engineers who provide case data and run analyses through MATLAB or Octave. Its scope is technical grid modeling, not a hosted energy-monitoring service, so it suits analysis workflows rather than teams seeking a managed dashboard for energy operations.
The core covers power-flow analysis, continuation power flow, and AC and DC optimal power flow. It also includes three-phase unbalanced power-flow, continuation-power-flow, and optimal-power-flow modeling. For scheduling, the separate MOST package supports generalized steady-state electric power scheduling. Together, these features provide a substantial set of steady-state studies within a focused simulation toolkit; they do not extend the product into a general-purpose analytics suite spanning areas such as predictive asset monitoring or generation analytics.
MATPOWER is open source and available without a paid plan, and its deployment is self-hosted. The documentation identifies MATLAB or Octave as requirements; Windows, macOS, and Linux support reflects those runtimes rather than a claim of native MATPOWER builds. Documentation and community are the listed support channels. Choose MATPOWER if you need an adaptable research or engineering environment for power-system simulation and optimization and can work with its runtime requirements. Consider another product if you need hosted energy monitoring, predictive asset analytics, or vendor-provided commercial support.
MATPOWER pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Covers power flow, continuation power flow, and AC/DC optimal power flow.
- Supports three-phase unbalanced power-system modeling.
- MOST adds generalized steady-state electric power scheduling.
- Where it doesn't
- Focused on steady-state simulation rather than broad energy analytics.
- Requires MATLAB or Octave to run analyses.
- Self-hosted, with documentation and community support channels.
