MaraDNS is a free, open-source DNS server for administrators who need authoritative service for domain zones, recursive resolution, or both. It supports Windows and Linux deployments and includes Deadwood for recursive DNS resolution. Its feature set covers common records such as A, AAAA, MX, NS, SOA, TXT, SPF, and SRV, along with multiple authoritative zones, zone transfers, synchronization-related records, wildcard files, and default zone files.

Its configuration model is centered on configuration files and CSV2 zone files, making it a fit for teams that prefer self-managed, file-based administration. The included askmara command-line tool supports DNS querying, while CSV2 provides the format used to define zones and records. This approach keeps the product focused on core DNS service delivery, but it is less suitable for buyers seeking broader management features in a more expansive administrative system.

The main technical limitation is DNSSEC support: MaraDNS does not support it. That makes the product a better match for straightforward authoritative and recursive DNS requirements than for deployments where DNSSEC is a necessary part of the DNS posture. Choose MaraDNS if free, open-source software, Windows or Linux support, and direct control over DNS configuration are priorities. Look elsewhere if DNSSEC or broader DNS management capabilities are central requirements.
