MapX is an open-source web application for managing and visualizing geospatial data, developed by GRID-Geneva, a data centre associated with the University of Geneva, UNEP and the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment. Its focus is environmental decision-making, including biodiversity planning, climate change, disaster risk reduction and land-use planning. It suits organizations seeking a public-data catalog and map views, with a cloud deployment and an API listed among its platforms.
Its mapping workflow spans discovery, editing and presentation. Users can search public geospatial data across projects, configure vector, raster, story-map and custom-code views, and display raster sources through WMS and WMTS. Supported vector and tabular data can be imported, edited, styled and exported; map layouts can be exported as PNG. Dashboards can be associated with map views, and the SDK supports embedding MapX in other webpages. This breadth is useful for publishing and communicating map-based information, though dashboard creation requires coding skills and some publishing capabilities are restricted to publishers.
Analysis is a narrower fit: the listed spatial operation is analyzing overlapping areas and creating an intersection data layer, and that tool is publisher-only. MapX is therefore more appropriate for teams prioritizing open-source map catalogs, visualization and simple dashboards than for users who need broad spatial analysis or a no-code dashboard workflow. The product is free and open source, with documentation and email listed as support channels. GDPR is listed in its compliance posture. Organizations that need more extensive analysis or unrestricted publishing should weigh those limits before choosing it.
