Malloy review
A developer-focused semantic layer for reusable models, SQL compilation, and API access.

Malloy is an open-source analytical language for describing data relationships, reusable semantic models, queries, and transformations. It is designed for analysts, data scientists, data engineers, and developers building data applications, with particular appeal for developers who want to create and maintain open-source semantic models. Malloy runs against SQL databases and compiles queries to SQL, while supporting reusable dimensions, measures, aggregates, joins, nested views, and named queries. It can also produce nested results, visualizations, and dashboard-oriented outputs.
Its standout strength is the combination of semantic modeling and developer workflow. The Visual Studio Code extension brings query execution, schema browsing, autocomplete, and result visualizations into the modeling environment. Malloy also provides a CLI, notebooks, Publisher, REST API, and MCP server. The REST API enables querying published Malloy models, while MCP connects AI assistants to semantic models. Database connectivity includes DuckDB, MotherDuck, BigQuery, Databricks, Snowflake, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Trino, and Presto, with MSSQL available through DuckDB. This gives teams several ways to author, query, publish, and integrate models.
Malloy fits teams comfortable with self-hosted deployment and code-centered data work. Its reusable modeling primitives and SQL compilation are well suited to shared definitions of metrics, relationships, and analytical queries. The trade-off is operational and workflow complexity: teams must manage their own deployment, and the primary authoring experience centers on Visual Studio Code rather than a standalone hosted interface. The combination of extensions, publishing, APIs, and MCP can support varied applications, but may be more than needed for teams seeking a simple managed reporting tool. Choose Malloy for open-source semantic modeling and developer-led data applications; choose an alternative if you need a hosted, low-operations experience.
Malloy pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Reusable dimensions, measures, aggregates, joins, and named queries
- Compiles modeled queries to SQL across multiple database systems
- VS Code, REST API, and MCP workflows support development and access
- Where it doesn't
- Self-hosted deployment puts infrastructure responsibility on the team
- The primary authoring environment is a Visual Studio Code extension
- Model publishing and API workflows add operational complexity
