mailbox is a Germany-hosted email and collaboration service for private individuals, families, businesses, and public-sector organizations. It combines webmail with PGP and S/MIME encryption, spam and malware filtering, aliases, calendars, contacts, tasks, and access through common mail protocols. The service is operated by Heinlein Hosting GmbH, with data stored in Berlin-based data centers. Its six-platform coverage includes web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, making it suitable for people who want secure hosting without being tied to one mail application.
Pricing is structured around three tiers. Light costs €1 per month with annual billing, includes 2 GB of mailbox storage, three @mailbox.org aliases, a calendar and address book, and IMAP and POP3 access; annual payment requires a €12 minimum deposit. Standard costs €4 per month monthly or €3 per month annually, adding 20 GB of storage, 25 @mailbox.org aliases, 50 custom-domain aliases, 10 GB of Drive storage, Office, and Meet. Premium costs €12 monthly or €9 per month annually, with 50 GB of mailbox storage, 250 custom-domain aliases, and 100 GB of Drive storage. A 30-day trial is available, but there is no free plan.
The main advantage is client flexibility: mailbox supports IMAP, POP3, SMTP, CalDAV, CardDAV, Exchange ActiveSync, Thunderbird, Outlook, Apple Mail, and DAVx⁵. Optional PGP and S/MIME encryption, two-factor authentication, disposable addresses, and synchronization add useful control for security-conscious users. Custom-domain email is reserved for Standard and Premium, while Light is aimed at basic personal use. Choose mailbox if you want low-cost secure hosting, established protocol support, and optional productivity services. Consider another provider if you need a free tier or custom-domain email at the entry level.
