Magic Wormhole review
A private, code-based CLI for peer-to-peer transfers and developer integrations.

Magic Wormhole is an open-source Python library and command-line tool for transferring arbitrary-sized files, directories, and short text messages between computers. It is aimed at individuals, developers, and teams that want private transfers without relying on a hosted file-sharing interface. The same short, single-use human-readable code is entered on both endpoints, making the connection process direct and easy to describe. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with desktop deployment and company-size fit ranging from solo users to enterprise environments.
Its strongest technical distinction is the combination of privacy and transfer flexibility. Connections use PAKE-based end-to-end encryption, typically transfer directly between peers, and can fall back to encrypted transit relays when a direct route is unavailable. Tor connectivity adds another network option. The Python library API and support for custom relay infrastructure also make Magic Wormhole suitable for software integrations or controlled internal workflows. These capabilities favor users who value protocol-level control over polished file-sharing features.
The trade-off is its narrow product shape. Magic Wormhole is a local command-line and library project rather than a hosted service, and it does not center on business sharing, tracking, administration, branding, or download analytics. Support is provided through community channels and documentation. Choose it when secure, code-based peer-to-peer transfers, directory support, or Python integration matter most. Choose a hosted file-transfer product instead when a graphical desktop experience, managed administration, or sharing analytics are central requirements.
