Our verdict on Magenta Studio
Magenta Studio is a free collection of five machine-learning music tools for Ableton Live. It works with MIDI clips to generate phrases, extend melodies or drum beats, combine two musical ideas, adjust drum timing and velocity, and create drum accompaniment. The product is aimed at solo producers and small teams using Ableton Live who want local generation for melodies and drums rather than audio rendering or a broad instrument library.
The current version runs as a Max for Live device inside Ableton Live 10.1 Suite or later, making Ableton and Max for Live the central ecosystem fit. The published offering is free, and its models are integrated into the plugin, so generation does not require internet access. Windows and macOS appear in the official documentation for the standalone applications, while the current product is the Ableton Live plugin. Buyers should therefore plan around an Ableton-based desktop workflow rather than a general-purpose standalone tool.
Its five devices cover distinct MIDI tasks. Continue follows an input melody or drum beat for up to 32 measures; Generate creates four-bar phrases without an input clip; Interpolate combines two inputs; Groove changes drum timing and velocity; and Drumify derives drum accompaniment from melodic, harmonic, or rhythmic material. Temperature control adjusts randomness. That focused toolkit suits MIDI sketching and rhythmic transformation, but it does not produce audio and remains centered on melodies and drums. The vendor says the former standalone applications are not actively maintained, so users seeking a standalone workflow should choose another type of instrument generator.
