Lumio review
A capable local-catalog manager for technical users who want control over original files.

Lumio is a self-hosted photo management application for people who want to organize and edit images while keeping originals in their existing file system. It watches folders, synchronizes libraries, reads EXIF metadata, generates thumbnails, and provides a web interface for browsing, searching, uploading, album management, and non-destructive editing. The project is intended primarily for personal use and experimentation, making it a fit for technical users running a NAS, home server, or other computer they control.
Its strongest area is local catalog management. Filesystem watching and automatic synchronization reduce the need to import originals into a separate service, while EXIF search and filtering support metadata-driven organization. Standard and smart albums, favorites, soft-delete trash, storage statistics, and an activity log add practical catalog controls. Browser uploads use content-hash deduplication, and the supported formats include JPEG, PNG, WebP, TIFF, JXL, HEIC, and HEIF. Multiple independent catalogs also make Lumio suitable for keeping separate libraries apart.
Deployment is designed around Docker Compose with web, worker, and PostgreSQL containers, with PostgreSQL, Docker Compose, and Portainer listed as integrations. Passkey and two-factor authentication provide account security controls. Lumio remains focused on self-hosted image organization rather than a broader photo ecosystem: it has no AI features, mobile platforms, or built-in sharing. Users who want local control, original-quality storage, editing, and catalog tools should consider it; those who need mobile access, social sharing, or a more established open-source licensing model should choose an alternative.
