Our verdict on Luminance HDR

Luminance HDR is open-source desktop software for creating, editing, and tone-mapping high dynamic range images. It is aimed at photographers and imaging users who need a free workflow for bracketed exposures, direct RAW processing, HDR editing, and export to formats such as OpenEXR, Radiance RGBE, TIFF, PFS, and FITS. The application runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and supports both bracketed and single-image HDR workflows.

Its strongest area is control over the HDR pipeline. Luminance HDR can align images automatically with align_image_stack and MTB, provide interactive anti-ghosting tools, and tone-map HDR images through multiple operators with adjustable settings. It also includes resizing, rotation, projective transformations, and EXIF metadata copying. These features make it suitable for users who want more than a basic merge-and-export tool, particularly when source images need alignment or correction before tone mapping.

Batch and automation features extend the product beyond occasional manual edits. Users can create HDR images from bracketed photo sets in batches, apply batch tone mapping with multiple settings files, convert RAW files through LibRaw, and use command-line tools for HDR creation and tone mapping. The trade-off is a workflow oriented toward desktop imaging and technical control rather than a simplified mobile or browser-based experience. Choose Luminance HDR if free, open-source software with broad HDR processing and output support is the priority. Users seeking a narrowly guided workflow or a less technical approach may prefer a simpler HDR editor.
