Lumen review
An alpha-stage toolkit for building native desktop apps with markup, CSS, and Candela.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Lumen gives developers a way to build native desktop applications using `.lmn` markup, CSS, and Candela scripting. It targets Linux, macOS, and Windows, with GPU or CPU rendering. Small teams exploring a native UI toolkit may appreciate the mix of markup-based interfaces and desktop-specific capabilities. It is in alpha, however, so teams that need stable APIs should weigh that status carefully before choosing it for an application with long-term maintenance needs.
The framework’s UI approach combines CSS flexbox and grid layouts with reactive signals and conditional or list rendering. Candela scripting includes hot reload. Lumen also provides controls and layout tools, accessibility tree support through AccessKit, and operating-system features such as menus, tray icons, notifications, and file dialogs. That breadth makes it more than a styling layer, while keeping its focus on desktop applications rather than mobile targets. Teams seeking a framework that spans desktop and mobile should look elsewhere.
A command-line tool, `lumenc`, covers creating, checking, formatting, running, and packaging applications. It also supports headless CI testing with click, type, screenshot, and snapshot commands, which may suit teams that want automated UI checks in their build workflows. Lumen is free and open source, and its deployment model is self-hosted. Documentation is the listed support channel. The alpha designation and the possibility of API changes are its clearest tradeoffs; solo developers and small teams willing to work with an evolving toolkit are the more natural fit than teams prioritizing API stability or mobile deployment.
Lumen pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Defines interfaces with `.lmn` markup and styles them with CSS layouts.
- Includes native menus, tray icons, notifications, and file dialogs.
- CLI supports packaging apps and headless CI testing workflows.
- Where it doesn't
- Alpha status means APIs may change between releases.
- Targets desktop platforms, with no mobile targets.
- Support is through documentation.
