Luacheck is an open-source command-line static analyzer and linter for Lua. It is designed for developers maintaining Lua source files, directories, and rockspecs, with particular fit for game tooling and other Lua-focused projects. Its checks cover undefined and non-standard globals, unused variables and values, uninitialized variables, redefinitions, shadowing, unreachable code, control-flow problems, and formatting violations such as line-length limits.

The product is free to use and can run locally, in Docker, or in continuous-integration workflows. GitHub Actions usage supports CI adoption, while result caching and parallel file checking can help with larger checks. Multiple output formatters, including JUnit and TAP, make results easier to feed into automated workflows. Configuration is available through command-line options, project configuration files, and inline comments, including custom global and standard-library definitions and warning filters by code or variable name.

Luacheck also fits a broad editor ecosystem: integrations include Vim, Sublime Text, Atom, Emacs, Brackets, Visual Studio Code, Nova, and Geany. LuaRocks adds a natural fit for Lua package workflows. Its scope is intentionally narrow, so teams working across several languages will need additional linters. It also does not provide a verified autofix feature, making it better suited to identifying and reporting issues than automatically rewriting code. Choose Luacheck for focused Lua diagnostics, configurable rules, and CI-friendly output; consider another tool alongside it when multi-language analysis or automated fixes is a priority.
