Our verdict on LoudReader

LoudReader turns e-books, PDFs, and web articles into spoken audio, with text highlighting as it reads. It is aimed at people who prefer listening to reading on iPhone, iPad, or compatible Macs, especially those who want document processing to stay on device. Import DRM-free EPUB and PDF files, save web articles through the Share Extension, or browse public-domain books from Project Gutenberg. Offline listening supports use away from a connection, while the narrow Apple-platform scope makes it a poor fit for people who need Android or Windows access.

The Free plan costs nothing and includes unlimited listening and an unlimited library. All voices are free for the first 8 hours; one natural voice is available thereafter. Premium costs $7.99 per month or $49.99 per year, and adds all 23 studio narrators across 10 languages, voice cloning, adjustable speed, a sleep timer, ambient soundscapes, and notes and highlights. A $199.99 one-time Lifetime option includes Premium features permanently and does not renew. These tiers make it possible to continue listening without paying, but accessing the full voice library and Premium tools means choosing a paid plan.

On-device text-to-speech and voice cloning are the distinguishing privacy-oriented features, complemented by word-by-word highlighting and playback speed from 0.3x to 3.0x. This is a focused listening app rather than a broad reading ecosystem: Project Gutenberg is the listed integration, and support is by email. Choose LoudReader if its Apple compatibility, local processing, and document-listening workflow match your needs. Look elsewhere if you need wider platform coverage or integrations beyond its focused reading sources.
