Lookout by Google is a free Android accessibility app for people who are blind or have low vision. It uses a device’s camera and sensors to provide information about nearby surroundings, reading text and describing objects. Its range of modes includes reading text and full document pages aloud, scanning food labels and barcodes, identifying US dollar, euro and Indian rupee banknotes, and finding selected objects with direction and distance guidance on most phones. Users can also capture, upload or share images for descriptions that detect text and objects.
The breadth of recognition is the product’s defining strength: Lookout covers everyday objects, printed text, food packaging, banknotes and images rather than focusing on a single identification task. Food-label mode can work without an internet connection after its data is downloaded, which gives it a specific offline use case. Object guidance adds a practical navigation element, though it is available on most phones rather than stated as universal. Android users who want several recognition tools in one free app may find that range a good fit.
