Our verdict on llama.cpp

llama.cpp is an open-source C/C++ inference runtime for large language and vision-language models. It targets developers and teams running models on local desktops, servers, mobile devices or cloud infrastructure. The project supports Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and API deployments, with CPU inference, GPU acceleration and edge-device support. Its MIT license and free availability suit solo developers through enterprise engineering groups that want self-hosted control.

Model execution centers on GGUF files, with command-line Hugging Face downloads plus conversion and quantization tools for preparing compatible models. Quantization spans 1.5-, 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, 6- and 8-bit integers, while backends include CUDA, HIP, Metal, Vulkan and SYCL. CPU+GPU hybrid inference allows workloads to divide execution across available hardware. The included HTTP server exposes OpenAI-compatible inference endpoints, giving teams a straightforward way to connect applications while keeping deployment on desktop, server, cloud or mobile targets.

The tradeoff is a tooling-oriented workflow rather than a packaged managed service. Teams need to work with GGUF models and may need conversion or quantization steps before inference; support is provided through community channels and documentation. Choose llama.cpp when minimal dependencies, broad hardware coverage, local execution and fine-grained quantization matter. Consider another engine when you want a fully managed model service, a graphical setup path or support arrangements beyond community and docs.
