Liveblocks provides hosted, WebSocket-based infrastructure and developer SDKs for adding real-time collaboration to web applications. Its room-based model combines connection management with presence, cursors, selections, shared persistent data, and conflict-free synchronization. Teams building collaborative editors, design tools, or other shared web experiences can add those functions without assembling each feature independently. The product is aimed at application developers rather than teams seeking only general-purpose pub/sub or WebSocket connections.

Its feature set goes beyond live presence: users can work offline and synchronize on reconnect, use multiplayer undo and redo, and exchange contextual comments with mentions and reactions. Notifications can be sent in-app, by email, Slack, Microsoft Teams, web push, or webhook. The integration range includes React and React Flow, several editor packages such as ProseMirror, Tiptap, BlockNote, and Lexical, plus Redux, Zustand, Yjs, Node.js, Python, and a REST API. That makes Liveblocks a fit for teams choosing among supported web development tools; those with a different stack or a need for lower-level infrastructure may prefer a more general WebSocket service.

The Free plan includes monthly credits, realtime infrastructure, collaboration features, and pre-built components. Pro is $25 per month with annual billing and includes $30 in monthly credits and branding removal. Team is $500 per month with annual billing, $600 in monthly credits, extended version history, higher webhook event frequency, more simultaneous connections, and public/private comments. Enterprise adds volume discounts, multi-region hosting, self-hosting, a management API, SCIM and directory sync, and advanced support. Start with Free for prototyping; choose a paid tier when its credits or collaboration controls fit, and consider Enterprise for self-hosting or organizational management needs.

Liveblocks pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Rooms support presence, cursors, selections, and connection management.
    • Shared data supports conflict-free sync, offline editing, and multiplayer undo/redo.
    • Integrates with React, editors, state libraries, REST APIs, and webhooks.
  • Where it doesn't
    • The focus is collaborative app features, not general-purpose WebSocket infrastructure.
    • Pro and Team annual-billing prices start at $25/month and $500/month, respectively.
    • Self-hosting is offered on Enterprise, not the lower tiers.
