  • Where it wins

    • Supports reliable, unreliable, sequenced, and unordered delivery modes
    • Includes fragmentation, MTU handling, NAT punching, and IPv6 support
    • Works across .NET, Unity, Godot, MonoGame, desktop, mobile, and Switch
  • Where it doesn't

    • Provides low-level transport rather than matchmaking or persistence
    • Uses UDP as its transport protocol
    • Requires developers to shape the networking architecture around the library

Our verdict on LiteNetLib

LiteNetLib is an open-source C# networking library for multiplayer games and other real-time applications. It supports both peer-to-peer and client-server communication over UDP, making it suited to developers who need control over transport behavior across .NET, Mono, Unity, Godot, MonoGame, desktop systems, mobile platforms, and Nintendo Switch development. Its hybrid network model and MIT license also fit projects that need a library they can integrate into their own technology stack.

The library’s delivery and packet-handling options are its main strength. Developers can select reliable ordered, reliable unordered, sequenced, or unreliable delivery, with multiple data channels for separating traffic. Automatic packet merging and fragmentation help manage payloads, while MTU detection and override support provide additional control. UDP NAT hole punching, IPv6 support, packet loss and latency simulation, connection statistics, and serialization helpers extend it beyond basic datagram transport and provide tools for building and diagnosing real-time communication.

LiteNetLib is best suited to teams comfortable designing their own multiplayer networking layer. It supplies transport features and diagnostics, but matchmaking and persistence are outside its stated scope, so projects needing those capabilities will need additional systems or a different product. The published project is distributed as an MIT-licensed open-source library, and the latest listed release is LiteNetLib 2.1.4. Choose it when platform reach, delivery-mode flexibility, and direct UDP control matter most; choose an alternative when managed backend services are central to the requirement.
