Lightbits SDS is disaggregated software-defined block storage for enterprise private clouds, public clouds, and hybrid deployments. It pools NVMe storage across standard x86 servers and exposes persistent block volumes over NVMe/TCP. The platform is aimed at organizations running Kubernetes, OpenStack, VMware vSphere, KubeVirt, OpenShift, or cloud environments on AWS and Microsoft Azure.

Its strongest fit is cloud-native infrastructure that needs programmable storage management and policy-based volume services. REST, gRPC, CLI, and Terraform interfaces support operational automation, while Kubernetes CSI and OpenStack Cinder integrations connect the platform to established orchestration environments. Core storage capabilities include thin provisioning, inline compression, snapshots and clones, per-volume replication policies, quality-of-service controls, and automatic node-failure recovery with auto-healing. Prometheus and Grafana integrations extend its fit into observability workflows.

The published plans divide deployment into Private Cloud & Service Providers and Public cloud. The private-cloud plan supports on-premises deployment on customer-selected hardware and includes all product features, premium technical support, and a dedicated customer success manager. The public-cloud plan supports AWS or Azure deployment, a portable software license, technical support, and payment based on storage used. Lightbits SDS is a stronger choice for teams prioritizing NVMe/TCP block storage, hybrid deployment, and Kubernetes or OpenStack integration. Organizations seeking object storage, an open-source option, or a simpler storage product may prefer a more narrowly aligned alternative.

Lightbits SDS pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Persistent NVMe/TCP block volumes with thin provisioning and compression
    • Kubernetes, OpenStack, VMware, and public-cloud integrations
    • Snapshots, replication, auto-healing, and quality-of-service controls
  • Where it doesn't
    • Commercial pricing requires clarification before budgeting
    • Focused on block storage rather than S3-compatible object storage
    • No free plan or open-source edition
