LibreSwan review
A focused, free IPsec VPN toolkit for Linux and BSD administrators.

LibreSwan is free, open-source VPN software for administrators who need to establish IPsec tunnels between network nodes. It runs as the pluto daemon on Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD, using each host operating system’s IPsec stack. Its focus is infrastructure rather than end-user simplicity: typical users include Linux administrators building site-to-site connections, remote-access or road-warrior VPNs, and route-based tunnels.
The feature set covers the main building blocks of an IPsec deployment. LibreSwan supports IKEv1 and IKEv2, site-to-site subnet VPNs, NAT traversal, and route-based VPNs using VTI. Authentication can use certificates or preshared keys, while NSS-backed storage handles X.509 certificates and private keys. Support for Linux XFRM and the BSD KAME IPsec stack helps it fit environments already built around those operating-system networking layers. These capabilities make it particularly suitable when tunnel behavior and host-level control matter more than a graphical management experience.
Administration is handled through text files and command-line tools, so deployment and ongoing changes require familiarity with IPsec concepts, operating-system networking, and certificate or key management. LibreSwan is self-hosted infrastructure software with a free open-source model and no commercial plan tiers. That keeps the product focused and avoids dependence on a hosted control plane, but it also limits its appeal for teams seeking a browser-based console, verified integrations, or broader enterprise controls. Choose LibreSwan for technically focused Linux or BSD VPN infrastructure; consider an alternative if your priority is managed administration, wider platform coverage, or a more guided onboarding path.
