Our verdict on libGDX

libGDX is an open-source, code-centric Java framework for building 2D and 3D games. It is aimed at developers who prefer fine-grained control through code rather than a visual editor workflow. The framework provides a unified API with platform backends for Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, iOS, and web deployment, making it suitable for teams targeting several of those platforms from one codebase.

Its scope covers much of the core game-development stack. Graphics APIs support both 2D and 3D work, while audio playback and recording, input handling, file I/O, asset management, preferences, and serialization address common implementation needs. Box2D and Bullet integrations provide 2D and 3D physics options. TCP, HTTP, and WebSocket networking support online features, and project generation is handled through the gdx-liftoff setup tool. The ecosystem also includes integrations with Google Play Games, Apple Game Center, Firebase, Steamworks API, GameAnalytics, Facebook Graph API, and AdMob, plus cross-platform service integrations and in-app purchases.

The main trade-off is its development model. libGDX does not provide visual scripting, so teams seeking a scene-editor-led workflow or low-code prototyping experience should consider a different engine. It also does not support console export, which limits its fit for projects targeting consoles. For Java, Groovy, Kotlin, or Scala developers who want a free framework with broad platform coverage, built-in systems, multiplayer-related capabilities, and direct control over implementation, libGDX is a focused option. It is less suitable for creators who prioritize visual authoring or console deployment.
