Our verdict on LexNebulis

LexNebulis is a free, open-source legal practice management platform for small law firms. It combines client and contact management, matter and case management, document organization, calendar and deadline tracking, time and expense tracking, billing, invoicing, conflict checking, reporting, electronic signatures, client intake, and client portals. Its legal accounting functions include trust and IOLTA accounting, client sub-ledgers, three-way trust-account reconciliation, compliance reporting, and accounting exports. The published support range is firms with 1 to 50 users, and the software is available through web, Linux, and API access.

The pricing model is straightforward: LexNebulis is presented as free and open-source rather than as a set of paid tiers. That makes it suitable for firms that want broad practice-management and accounting coverage without a subscription plan shaping access to features. The tradeoff is deployment responsibility. LexNebulis runs on infrastructure managed by the firm using Docker Compose, so the firm remains responsible for operating the environment and maintaining its deployment. That setup fits practices with the technical capacity to manage self-hosted software, but it is less suitable for buyers seeking a vendor-managed legal accounting service.

Its strongest area is the combination of legal workflow coverage and accounting controls. Trust and IOLTA accounting, client ledgers, three-way reconciliation, role-based access control, and audit trails address requirements that general accounting tools do not cover alone. Stripe and LawPay support payment workflows, while QuickBooks supports accounting connectivity. Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, and OneDrive extend document-storage options; SAML 2.0, OpenID Connect, SCIM 2.0, and SIEM platforms support identity and security workflows. Firms wanting one broad, self-hosted system should shortlist LexNebulis. Firms prioritizing managed infrastructure or a conventional paid vendor model should choose an alternative.
