Laravel Sail review
A focused, open-source Compose environment for building and testing Laravel applications locally.

Laravel Sail is an open-source command-line interface for Laravel’s default Docker development environment. It provides a project-level Docker Compose file and Sail script for running Laravel applications and their supporting services in containers. The intended audience is Laravel developers who want a local environment with minimal Docker experience. Sail supports macOS, Linux, and Windows through WSL2, and includes commands for managing application containers and running common Laravel development tasks.
Its strongest advantage is the breadth of services available within a Laravel-focused setup. Developers can run PHP, Composer, Artisan, Node, NPM, and Yarn commands, while database options include MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, and Valkey. Local search is covered through Meilisearch and Typesense, and RustFS provides S3-compatible local file storage. Mailpit intercepts local email and offers browser previews. Automated testing with Pest or PHPUnit, browser testing with Laravel Dusk and Selenium, and interactive container or root shell access round out the workflow. This makes Sail a practical fit for applications that need more than PHP and a single database.
Sail also fits teams that want their local environment expressed through Docker Compose and managed through a Laravel-oriented CLI. Its open-source model keeps the tool centered on project-level development rather than hosted services or commercial plan tiers. The trade-off is that the workflow remains closely tied to Docker, Compose, and Laravel conventions. Windows support runs through WSL2, adding another platform requirement. Choose Sail when Laravel is the center of development and local services, testing, and email inspection matter. Choose a broader container workflow when the project is not Laravel-focused or when Docker-based development is not appropriate.

- Open source with macOS, Linux, and Windows via WSL2 support
- Where it doesn't
- Windows development requires WSL2
- Docker and Docker Compose are central to the workflow
- Focused on Laravel rather than general-purpose container development
