Laradock review
A broad Docker toolkit for PHP teams that need many prebuilt development services.

Laradock is a free, open-source Docker-based development environment for PHP applications and related services. It is suited to developers working on Laravel, Symfony, WordPress, Drupal, Magento, and other PHP projects who want a configurable containerized workspace rather than a single-purpose local runtime. The environment runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows, provided Docker is installed, and supports multiple PHP versions and project-specific stacks.
Its main strength is breadth. Laradock provides preconfigured containers for more than 100 development services, covering web servers, databases, caches, queues, search tools, mail services, and development utilities. Docker Compose workflows let developers start selected services, while the Laradock CLI supports setup, starting, stopping, rebuilding, and log access. The workspace also includes PHP, Composer, Node, npm, Git, and other CLI tools. Environment variables and .env files control service selection and settings, giving teams a way to adapt the stack without replacing the overall workflow.
Laradock also extends beyond local containers with a browser-based Theia IDE service, production image building, and Kubernetes deployment templates. Those capabilities make it relevant for teams that want development and deployment configuration to sit in one project. However, Laradock remains a PHP-centered toolkit with a large service catalog, so teams seeking a language-neutral environment or a narrower, simpler setup may prefer a more focused alternative. Choose it when PHP projects need varied supporting services and configurable Compose workflows; look elsewhere when Docker dependence or the breadth of available services would add unnecessary overhead.
Laradock pros and cons
- Where it wins
- 100+ preconfigured services across web, database, cache, queue, and mail tools
- Compose workflows and a CLI cover setup, lifecycle control, rebuilding, and logs
- Supports multiple PHP versions, browser-based Theia IDE, and Kubernetes templates
- Where it doesn't
- Docker must be installed before Laradock can run
- Its broad service catalog is more PHP-focused than language-agnostic
- Kubernetes templates do not indicate local cluster creation or management
