LangGraph review
Graph-based control for developers who need durable, stateful agent workflows.

LangGraph is an open-source framework and runtime for developers building long-running, stateful agents and workflows. Its graph model combines deterministic code with model-driven steps, and supports single-agent, multi-agent, and hierarchical control flows. It is designed for teams that need fine-grained control over agent behavior rather than a predefined agent architecture, and can be used independently of LangChain.
Durability and state management are central strengths. LangGraph provides persistence and checkpointing, with execution that can resume after failures. Developers can inspect and modify agent state through human-in-the-loop controls, and use short-term and long-term memory for stateful workflows. Token-by-token streaming is also supported. These capabilities suit processes that need to run over time or pause for human input; simpler applications that do not need workflow state or orchestration may not benefit from this level of control.
LangGraph is free and open-source, with API and self-hosted platform options. LangChain and LangSmith are the listed integrations; LangSmith can be added for tracing and debugging, while its published prices apply to that separate product, not LangGraph. The integration set is narrower than LangChain’s, so developers whose priority is a broader ecosystem may prefer to evaluate LangChain. Choose LangGraph when durable execution, state management, and explicit control flows matter; choose a higher-level approach when a predefined agent architecture is a better fit.
LangGraph pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Combines deterministic code and LLM-driven steps in graph workflows
- Supports durable execution, checkpointing, and resumption after failures
- Offers memory, streaming, and human review of agent state
- Where it doesn't
- Low-level control requires developers to define workflow behavior
- Does not prescribe a high-level agent architecture
- Verified integrations are narrower than LangChain’s
