Our verdict on LabPlot

LabPlot is free, open-source desktop software for visualizing and analyzing scientific and technical data. It is aimed at researchers, engineers, educators, and other users working with structured or experimental data. The application runs locally on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with additional packages for FreeBSD and Haiku. Its core visualization features cover interactive 2D scatter, line, histogram, box, bar, KDE, Q-Q, and control charts, while analysis tools include regression, curve fitting, smoothing, interpolation, integration, differentiation, and Fourier transforms.

LabPlot’s strongest advantage is breadth for scientific workflows. It imports and exports across formats including CSV, Origin, SAS, Stata, SPSS, MATLAB, SQL, JSON, binary, ODS, Excel, HDF5, MQTT, FITS, netCDF, ROOT, LTspice, Ngspice, MCAP, and Kaggle datasets. Live data can come from files, named pipes, TCP/UDP sockets, local sockets, and serial ports. Computational notebooks support Maxima, Octave, R, Scilab, Sage, KAlgebra, Qalculate!, Python, Julia, and Lua, with integrations including Jupyter, Cantor, SQL databases, and Nextcloud. Plot digitization adds manual or semi-automated curve extraction from external images.

For teams that need repeatable or extensible analysis, the SDK, shared library, Python wrappers, batch processing, templates, themes, autosave, spreadsheets, matrices, and Project Explorer add useful structure. The trade-off is its desktop focus: LabPlot is not a hosted dashboard or embedded analytics product, so it is a less natural choice for browser-based sharing and dashboard delivery. Choose it for local scientific plotting, statistical analysis, notebooks, and broad data connectivity; choose another category tool when web dashboards or embedded analytics are the primary requirement.
