Our verdict on L3DT
L3DT is a Windows desktop application for generating and editing terrain maps, heightfields, textures, light maps, bump maps, and alpha maps. It is aimed at game developers, 3D artists, and other professional users creating large 3D worlds. Its procedural tools support designable, fractal, and Perlin-based terrain generation, with controls for altitude, roughness, lakes, climate, materials, and land types.
The product's strongest area is terrain-generation depth. Users can work in 2D and view terrain in real time in 3D, then apply water flooding, erosion, terraces, cliffs, volcanoes, and mountain-peak effects. Batch generation and queued calculation workflows support repeated or larger jobs, while scripting and plugins extend the workflow.
