Kubetest2 is an open-source command-line framework for deploying Kubernetes clusters and running end-to-end tests against them. It is aimed at teams working on Kubernetes infrastructure, test automation, conformance validation, and cluster lifecycle workflows. Its architecture separates deployers, the orchestration executable, and test runners, so those components can be developed independently. The project is associated with Kubernetes SIGs and is used in Kubernetes project test infrastructure.

Its strongest area is the breadth of deployed-testing workflows it brings together. Kubetest2 can manage clusters through deployer executables and run testers for clusterloader2, arbitrary commands, Ginkgo-based Kubernetes tests, and node tests. It supports GCE, GKE, KinD, and no-op deployers, while integrations and related implementations include Terraform, kubetest2-tf, kubetest2-aks, kubetest2-kops, and kubetest2-ec2. Kubernetes conformance test execution is also supported, making the framework relevant when lifecycle management and test execution need to remain connected.

The extension model is useful for teams with specialized infrastructure because external deployer and tester implementations can be discovered and invoked when available in PATH. At the same time, that model puts more responsibility on the engineering team to assemble and maintain the surrounding executables. Kubetest2 executes locally, and the project is currently unversioned and unreleased, considerations for teams that need a centrally managed service, formal release channels, or a more packaged testing experience. Choose it for flexible Kubernetes lifecycle and conformance workflows; consider an alternative if you need a hosted interface or a fully integrated platform.

Kubetest2 pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Manages cluster lifecycles through deployer executables
    • Runs end-to-end, conformance, Ginkgo, and node tests
    • Supports GCE, GKE, KinD, AWS EC2, and Azure AKS
  • Where it doesn't
    • Currently unversioned and unreleased
    • Local execution may not suit centrally managed test workflows
    • Requires separate deployer and tester executables for extensions
