Kubeflow Notebooks provides interactive development environments for AI, machine learning, and data workloads running on Kubernetes. Teams create notebook servers in a cluster and access them through the Kubeflow dashboard. The component is aimed at organizations operating shared, Kubernetes-based data and ML infrastructure rather than individuals looking for a standalone notebook application. It supports web access and self-hosted deployment, with hosted notebook execution inside cluster-based containers.

Its main strength is the control available around each notebook environment. Users can choose JupyterLab, RStudio, or Visual Studio Code through code-server, while administrators can provide approved container images or allow custom images. CPU, RAM, workspace volumes, and data volumes are configurable, optional GPU allocation is available, and persistent storage is provided through PVC-backed directories. Kubeflow RBAC-based access control adds a defined access layer for teams managing notebook servers within a cluster. These capabilities make the product a strong fit when compute, storage, images, and access rules need to be managed as part of an existing Kubernetes platform.

The trade-off is its narrow infrastructure focus. Kubeflow Notebooks is built around Kubernetes operations and supports Python and R with Jupyter Notebook (.ipynb) formats, so it is less suited to users seeking a simpler hosted notebook service or a broader collaborative workspace. The project direction also matters: Kubeflow Workspaces is described as the next generation of Kubeflow Notebooks and is replacing the original Notebooks controller, while Workspaces is currently beta. Choose Kubeflow Notebooks when cluster-level control and configurable environments are priorities; consider another notebook product for lighter setup, broader collaboration features, or a platform independent of Kubernetes.
