kube-vip is an open-source Kubernetes networking project for teams running self-hosted clusters on Linux. It provides virtual IP addresses for Kubernetes control-plane endpoints and supports Kubernetes Services of type LoadBalancer. Its focus is infrastructure-level availability and traffic distribution rather than application-aware routing, making it a fit for platform engineers managing on-premises or otherwise self-managed Kubernetes environments.

The feature set covers several common networking designs. kube-vip can advertise addresses through ARP at Layer 2 or BGP at Layer 3, and it provides Layer 4 load balancing through IPVS. Service addresses can come from configured CIDR blocks or IP ranges, while DHCP-based service addresses are also supported. The cloud-provider component is intended to allocate service IP addresses in on-premises environments. For high availability, the project supports per-service or global leader election, alongside virtual IP support for Kubernetes control-plane endpoints.

Deployment remains tied to the Kubernetes and Linux operating model. kube-vip can run as a static Pod or DaemonSet, but it is not a managed load-balancing service and does not provide Layer 7 routing. Teams that want direct control over cluster networking, address allocation, and advertisement methods should find its scope appropriate. Organizations looking for a hosted service or application-layer routing should choose a different category of product. kube-vip is therefore most suitable when Kubernetes service exposure, control-plane availability, and Layer 2, Layer 3, or Layer 4 behavior are the primary requirements.
