kube-hunter review
A focused Kubernetes hunting tool for targeted assessments, not ongoing cluster protection.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
kube-hunter is an open-source command-line security assessment tool for teams investigating weaknesses in Kubernetes clusters. It can hunt from remote machines, local network interfaces, CIDR ranges, or pods running inside a cluster, giving penetration testers several ways to examine exposed services and cluster behavior. Passive scanning is the default, while optional active hunting can perform state-changing tests. That makes kube-hunter a focused assessment utility for security teams that need targeted Kubernetes checks rather than a complete platform for continuous protection.
Its strongest capabilities are breadth of assessment location and control over the hunt itself. Kubernetes node auto-discovery, node network mapping, custom hunter selection, and MITRE ATT&CK technique mapping help organize an investigation across cluster components. Reports can be sent to standard output or over HTTP, including JSON reports, which supports downstream handling. The optional active mode deserves operational care because it can perform state-changing tests; teams should reserve it for authorized assessment scopes and understand the effect of selected hunters before running it.
kube-hunter is not a full Kubernetes security program. It does not provide posture management, image scanning, runtime protection, admission control, or identity security, and it has no managed Kubernetes offering. The published project status also says it is no longer under active development and recommends Trivy for current Kubernetes vulnerability and misconfiguration scanning. Choose kube-hunter when the priority is a free, self-hosted hunting tool for targeted penetration testing. Choose an actively maintained alternative when current vulnerability and misconfiguration coverage or ongoing preventive controls are central requirements.
