Koordinator is an open-source Kubernetes scheduling and resource-management system for teams sharing clusters across latency-sensitive microservices, AI workloads, and big-data jobs. It combines QoS-aware and priority-based scheduling with elastic and hierarchical quotas, helping administrators manage competing workloads without treating every request identically. The project supports GPU and heterogeneous-device scheduling, along with resource isolation at the node level. Deployment is self-hosted through Helm into an existing Kubernetes cluster, with scheduler, manager, daemon, and optional runtime components.

Its strongest area is workload scheduling depth. Koordinator supports gang scheduling, job-level preemption, GPU sharing, fine-grained GPU allocation, resource overcommitment, pod colocation, and node-load-aware descheduling. Topology-aware scheduling is aimed at AI workloads, while Prometheus metrics and observability endpoints provide a path for monitoring resource behavior. These controls make it a fit for organizations that need to improve GPU utilization while preserving scheduling policies across mixed workload types.

The main trade-off is operational scope: Koordinator is a self-hosted Kubernetes project, not a vendor-hosted service. Teams should be prepared to install and operate its components within their Kubernetes environment. It is a strong choice for platform teams that want open-source control over GPU allocation, quotas, preemption, and cluster sharing. Organizations seeking a standalone scheduler outside Kubernetes or a managed commercial offering should choose an alternative designed for that deployment model.

Koordinator pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Fine-grained GPU sharing with topology-aware scheduling
    • QoS, priority, gang scheduling, and preemption controls
    • Free, open-source deployment with Prometheus observability
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires an existing Kubernetes cluster
    • Self-hosted deployment requires operational ownership
    • Kubernetes-centric rather than a general-purpose cluster manager
