Kiln review
A focused AI evaluation workbench, not a general-purpose business analytics tool.

Kiln is a desktop AI development and evaluation workbench for engineers, data scientists, product managers, QA teams, and subject-matter experts. It combines dataset management, evaluation, synthetic-data generation, retrieval-augmented generation workflows, prompt optimization, agent tools, and collaboration. The source-available desktop app runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, while its open-source Python library supports deploying tasks. Local project storage and Git-based synchronization suit teams that want datasets and evaluations to remain close to their development workflow.
The freemium structure starts with an Individual plan that includes the open-source Python library, desktop app, local datasets with Git sync, Kiln Pro with standard models and rate limits, and community support. Team adds enhanced models and higher limits, automatic agent optimization, priority access to new features, and email support. Enterprise adds SSO / SAML, annual contracts and procurement support, an SLA, priority support, a dedicated solutions engineer, and custom onboarding and training. Kiln connects with providers and platforms including OpenAI, OpenRouter, AWS, Azure, Vertex, Together, Fireworks, Ollama, Anthropic, Gemini, Amazon Bedrock, Groq, Cerebras, and Hugging Face.
Its strongest fit is evaluation-heavy AI work: tagging and editing datasets, importing CSV files, ingesting documents, images, video, and audio for RAG search, configuring vector, full-text, and hybrid search, and comparing LLM-as-Judge or G-Eval results with human ratings. The AI Assistant can help plan experiments, read results, and optimize AI systems. Kiln is less suitable for teams seeking broad business analysis, especially workflows centered on SQL, visualization, or export. Choose it for AI dataset and system evaluation; choose another category tool for general-purpose analytics.
Kiln pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Strong dataset tagging, filtering, batch editing, and split management
- Supports LLM-as-Judge, G-Eval, human ratings, and synthetic data
- Works locally across Windows, macOS, and Linux with Git sync
- Where it doesn't
- Focuses on AI development rather than broad business data analysis
- Paid Team access uses request-based pricing; Enterprise pricing is custom
- No verified SQL, visualization, or export support
