Kill Bill is an open-source platform for building subscription billing and payment infrastructure. It suits organizations that need control over infrastructure and data, want to define complex subscription catalogs, or need billing logic that can be extended through plugins. Its catalog supports plans, pricing phases, trials, add-ons, recurring charges, usage-based billing, one-time charges, and seat-based models. The platform can be deployed in a customer-owned environment or cloud account, with APIs and Kaui providing administrative access to billing operations.

The billing feature set covers automatic invoice generation, payment triggering, proration for upgrades and downgrades, cancellations, credits, and adjustments. It also includes payment retry scheduling and overdue-account workflows, which makes it relevant for recurring-revenue operations where failed payments need structured follow-up. Multi-currency catalog and account billing support expands its fit for organizations serving customers across currencies. Integrations include Stripe, Adyen, PayPal, Braintree, GoCardless, Coinbase, Avalara, Vertex, AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes. Payment gateways, tax engines, and custom logic can be added through its plugin architecture. Tax support uses an Avalara connector rather than being part of the core platform.

Pricing reflects the deployment model. The Self-Hosted Open Source plan provides the open-source Kill Bill core and full control of infrastructure and data. The AWS Marketplace plan costs $40 per month, with AWS infrastructure costs added separately, and runs in the customer’s AWS account. That structure gives engineering teams flexibility but places deployment and operational responsibility on them. Kaui covers accounts, subscriptions, invoices, payments, tenants, billing configuration, and audit history as a back-office administration console. Teams seeking a ready-made payment acceptance product, or a customer-facing billing portal included in the platform, should consider a different fit. Kill Bill is better suited to technical teams building and operating their own billing stack.

Kill Bill pros and cons

  • Where it wins

    • Handles proration, retries, overdue workflows, and multicurrency billing
    • Extends through gateway, tax, and custom-logic plugins
  • Where it doesn't
    • Self-hosted deployment requires infrastructure ownership and administration
    • AWS Marketplace pricing excludes AWS infrastructure costs
    • Kaui is a back-office console rather than a customer billing portal
