KDiskMark is an open-source disk benchmark application for Linux distributions. It is designed for users assessing HDD and SSD performance through configurable storage tests, with both a Qt graphical interface and an interactive terminal interface for systems without a graphical display. The application presents sequential and random read/write results, along with IOPS and latency measurements, making it suitable for desktop Linux users, administrators, and technically oriented testers who want more control than a fixed benchmark routine provides.

Its strongest feature is configurability. Users can set block size, queue depth, and thread count, then run sequential or random read/write tests. KDiskMark also includes page-cache flushing and O_DIRECT options, which provide additional control over how storage tests are executed. Results can be turned into benchmark reports, while the IOPS and latency views add more context than throughput figures alone. The software uses Flexible I/O Tester (fio) to run its storage tests, combining a graphical workflow with a terminal-based option.

KDiskMark is free and open source, with installation available through release binaries and several Linux distribution repositories. Its platform focus is also its clearest boundary: it is intended for Linux rather than a cross-platform benchmarking workflow. Users who want an interactive HDD or SSD benchmark with adjustable test parameters, terminal access, and report generation should find its scope well aligned with that need. Those seeking broader hardware diagnostics or benchmarking outside Linux should choose a tool designed for those requirements instead.

KDiskMark pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Configures block size, queue depth, and thread count
    • Measures sequential, random, IOPS, and latency performance
    • Offers both a Qt graphical interface and interactive TUI
  • Where it doesn't
    • Supports Linux distributions rather than multiple operating systems
    • Focused on storage benchmarking rather than broader system tests
    • Requires familiarity with benchmark settings for detailed comparisons
