Our verdict on KDE Keysmith
KDE Keysmith is an open-source authenticator application for generating two-factor authentication codes for online accounts. It supports time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) and hash-based one-time passwords (HOTP), with a local design for KDE Plasma Desktop and Plasma Mobile. That makes it a focused choice for individual Linux users who want a native KDE application rather than a hosted team identity platform.
Its strongest functional area is token configuration. Keysmith lets users set account issuer information and advanced HOTP/TOTP parameters, while also parsing otpauth:// URIs. Those URIs can be accepted from the command line, which fits workflows that provision tokens through links or scripts. Recovery is available when an account is already in use, and D-Bus activation supports integration with the KDE desktop environment. Users who need a straightforward local generator with more control than basic code display should find this feature set well aligned with that need.
The trade-off is a narrow platform and storage scope. Keysmith runs on Linux and is distributed through KDE application channels and Flathub, so it is not suited to users who need one authenticator across multiple operating systems. Its documented capabilities do not include backup, synchronization, encrypted backup, push approvals, or team administration. Choose Keysmith for local TOTP and HOTP generation on KDE-oriented Linux systems; choose a different authenticator when cross-platform access, managed teams, or protected account transfer are central requirements.
