Karapace is an open-source implementation of Kafka Schema Registry and Kafka REST Proxy, aimed at teams that need to govern message schemas around Apache Kafka. It stores versioned schemas, checks compatibility between schema versions, and supports Avro, JSON Schema, and Protobuf. The platform is available as a self-hosted service and is designed as a drop-in replacement for the Confluent Schema Registry and Kafka REST Proxy APIs. That makes it a focused fit for Kafka-based event systems rather than a broad contract-testing product for every API style.

Its strongest area is schema lifecycle control. Version histories and compatibility checks help teams manage changes to message formats, while Confluent Schema Registry API compatibility can ease adoption in existing Kafka environments. The Kafka REST Proxy adds HTTP access for producing, consuming, and administering messages. Leader/replica architecture supports high availability, and metrics plus OpenTelemetry observability provide operational visibility. HTTP basic authentication and OAuth2/OIDC are also included for access control. These capabilities give Karapace useful platform depth without moving beyond its Kafka-centered scope.

Karapace is free and open source, so its cost model is straightforward, but teams should account for the work of operating a self-hosted service. It does not provide dedicated consumer or provider verification, which limits its fit for teams seeking a complete consumer-driven contract-testing workflow. AsyncAPI and GraphQL are also outside its listed contract formats. Choose Karapace when Kafka schema compatibility, REST access, and control over deployment are priorities. Choose a broader contract-testing platform instead when verification between service consumers and providers is central to the workflow.
