Juju review
A broad orchestration engine for application lifecycle operations across mixed infrastructure.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Juju is an open-source orchestration engine for DevOps engineers, SREs, system administrators, and organizations managing applications across heterogeneous infrastructure. Reusable charms support deployment and lifecycle operations such as installation, configuration, scaling, upgrading, integration, backup, and secret rotation. Juju can operate across Kubernetes, virtual machines, Linux containers, bare metal, and public or private clouds, making it suited to application environments that span more than one infrastructure type.
Its ecosystem coverage is a central strength. Juju integrates with Kubernetes, Amazon EC2 and EKS, Google Compute Engine and GKE, Microsoft Azure and AKS, OpenStack, MAAS, LXD, MicroK8s, Oracle OCI, and Terraform. Controllers and models organize deployments, while integrations and relations connect applications. Cross-model and cross-cloud integrations extend that operating model across separate environments, and APIs are available for clients and charm development.
The product is a strong fit when application lifecycle operations need to remain consistent across varied infrastructure, especially where reusable operators and infrastructure integrations matter more than a visual interface. It is less suitable for teams seeking a drag-and-drop workflow builder or a narrowly focused deployment tool with fewer operational concepts. Teams evaluating Juju should be prepared to work with charms, controllers, models, actions, and integrations as part of their orchestration approach.
Juju pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Reusable charms support repeatable application deployment and operations
- Works across Kubernetes, VMs, containers, bare metal, and multiple clouds
- Broad integrations include AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, OpenStack, and Terraform
- Where it doesn't
- No visual workflow builder for drag-and-drop orchestration
- Its breadth may be more than teams with a narrow deployment scope need
- Requires comfort with controllers, models, charms, and infrastructure operations
