JSON Editor review
A focused open-source component for building schema-driven JSON forms in web apps.

JSON Editor is an open-source JavaScript library for web applications that turns JSON Schema definitions into editable HTML forms. It is aimed at developers embedding structured data entry into a browser interface, rather than users looking for a standalone JSON utility. The library supports JSON Schema versions 3 and 4, validates current or arbitrary values against a schema, and provides JavaScript APIs for reading and writing editor values.
Its strongest fit is schema-driven form behavior. Field watchers and change events allow an application to respond as users edit values, while custom validation hooks provide a way to add application-specific checks. External schema references and JSON Pointers support more involved schema structures. Multiple CSS themes, including Bootstrap, Spectre, and Tailwind, help align generated forms with an existing web interface. Integrations with Mustache, Underscore, Hogan, Handlebars, EJS, and Ace Editor extend the surrounding UI options. Developers can install it through npm or load it from a CDN.
JSON Editor is free and open source, so there are no published commercial tiers to compare. The trade-off is project direction: the library is currently in maintenance mode, and active development has moved toward Jedison. That makes it a practical choice for an existing application that needs its current form generation, validation, API, and theme capabilities, especially when the required schema versions and browser-based architecture fit. Teams seeking an actively developed successor should evaluate Jedison instead, while teams needing general-purpose JSON querying, jq-style processing, batch operations, or diff comparison should choose a different tool.
