Our verdict on js-dos
js-dos is a free, open-source frontend and player for running MS-DOS and Windows 9x programs in web browsers or Node.js. It is aimed at developers embedding DOS software or games into web applications, as well as users creating js-dos bundles through Game Studio and the documentation. Mobile browsers are also supported, and the project can work with IMG and QCOW2 disk images.
Its strongest area is deployment flexibility. js-dos packages DOSBox and DOSBox-X emulator backends and offers WebAssembly and pure JavaScript builds, giving developers options for browser and Node.js execution. The feature set also covers local persistence, custom storage integrations, filesystem and game-progress saving, virtual controls, an onscreen keyboard, turbo controls, fast-forward, frame skip, and CPU metrics. WebRTC-NET adds multiplayer and IPX networking, while WebGL-backed 3Dfx rendering and Sockdrive support extend it beyond basic command-line emulation.
The trade-off is that js-dos is primarily an embedding and packaging toolkit rather than a ready-made desktop emulator experience. Developers should expect to work with its API, bundles, storage integrations, and documentation when preparing applications for the web or Node.js. Verified gamepad support and emulator save-state snapshots are not part of the available feature set. Choose js-dos when browser delivery, Node.js execution, open-source access, networking, or large-disk streaming matters; choose another emulator when controller support or snapshot-based save states is essential.
