JRiver Media Center is desktop software for organizing and playing audio, video, images, and television content on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is aimed at home-theater users who need more than a basic player, with library management, playback, television recording, metadata tools, network sharing, and multi-zone playback in one application. Format support includes WAV, AIFF, FLAC, APE, WMA Lossless, Apple Lossless, WavPack, DVD, and Blu-ray.

Pricing follows a one-time license model. The Linux-only plan costs $79.98, while the Windows-only and Mac-only plans each cost $99.98. The Master License costs $124.98 and is valid for Windows, macOS, and Linux, but only for a single major version. A 30-day full-feature trial provides a way to evaluate the software before purchasing. The pricing structure suits users who want permanent access, while a basic playback need may not justify the starting cost.

JRiver’s main strength is breadth. It combines audio and video playback with image and television libraries, electronic program guide-based viewing and recording, automatic audio and video stream conversion, library backup, cover-art and metadata tools, DirectShow-based video support through Red October, and sharing across computers, DLNA devices, and remote clients. Listed integrations include Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Last.fm, Flickr, Facebook, and Twitter. Choose JRiver Media Center if centralized media management, home-theater features, and network playback matter more than simplicity. Choose a narrower player instead if you only need straightforward playback without library, television, sharing, or multi-zone features.

  • Where it doesn't
    • No permanent free plan
    • The broad feature set may exceed basic playback needs
    • Some licenses are limited to one operating system
