Our verdict on Jekyll

Jekyll is an open-source, Ruby-based static site generator for personal, project, and organization websites. It turns Markdown, HTML, Liquid templates, layouts, front matter, and site data into deployable static files. Its blogging features include dated posts, tags, categories, excerpts, drafts, custom permalinks, and collections for structured content. The platform runs on macOS, Linux, and Windows, making it suited to developers and technical teams who prefer repository-driven content over a database-backed CMS.

The core strength is control over the generated site. Theme-based layouts, includes, assets, and stylesheets can be customized through theme file and stylesheet overrides, while the plugin system extends the build process. GitHub Pages deployment support gives the workflow a natural fit with GitHub-hosted projects, and GitHub Actions can support related automation. Custom-domain hosting is available through GitHub Pages. Choose Jekyll when file-based editing, custom code, and static output matter more than a visual publishing interface.

Jekyll has no vendor pricing plans because it is open-source software, but hosting and deployment are separate parts of the workflow. Future-dated posts are supported through the future configuration option; automated publication still requires an external build or deployment workflow. That makes scheduling less direct than in a hosted blogging system. Users who want granular control over templates, content structure, and deployment should find the model well aligned with their process. Those seeking managed hosting, a database-backed CMS, or a simpler nontechnical publishing experience should consider an alternative.
