Our verdict on JBake

JBake is an open-source, Java-based static site and blog generator for developers and designers. It combines content files with templates to create static websites and supports Markdown, AsciiDoc and HTML. Blog-focused features include RSS and Atom feeds, archive and tag pages, draft handling and sitemap generation. JBake runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, with Docker, SDKMAN and Homebrew options alongside build-tool integrations. It is a strong fit for solo developers and small teams comfortable managing source files, templates and deployment themselves.

The product’s feature depth is concentrated around static publishing. A local preview server with watch mode supports an iterative writing workflow, while multiple template engines—including Freemarker, Groovy, Thymeleaf, Jade and Pebble—give Java-oriented teams flexibility in how they structure sites. The build ecosystem is a notable advantage: Maven, Gradle, mill, sbt and SBuild plugins can connect publishing to existing project workflows. JBake also supports free-form custom-code theme editing and scheduled posts, making it more adaptable than a minimal file-to-HTML generator.

JBake’s main trade-off is its deployment model. Sites are self-hosted, so the publisher handles the build and hosting infrastructure rather than using an integrated hosted blogging service. Support is provided through documentation, and the product does not include AI features. Choose JBake when Java compatibility, template control, build-tool integration and static output matter more than visual administration or managed hosting. A hosted blogging platform is a better choice for teams seeking an all-in-one publishing environment with less infrastructure responsibility.
